Description:

This posting is for our 1981 Volkswagon Vanagon Westfalia camper, which is affectionately known as Wanderlust or "Wanda". The van is air cooled and has almost 176,000 miles on its original 2 liter fuel injected engine. It starts up, runs and drives well. We have owned it for more than two years and have enjoyed great camping trips to the California coast, Forest Lakes, the Superstitions, Lake Pleasant, etc. Life has been busy lately and although I still enjoy plenty of weekend drives and coffee runs, we haven't found the time for camping and therefore feel it is time to sell to a good home. The Good - As mentioned above, the van starts and runs well. I have had the oil changed every 1,500 miles since owning it and monitor my speed range by gear closely in order to avoid over working the engine, particularly in hot weather. I have also had Doug's Bugs in Phoenix go through the engine tin to ensure optimal cooling air flow. The manual transmission shifts smooth and stays in gear until the next shift. To my knowledge the van has resided either in California or Arizona for its entire 37 year life and as a result, there is far less rust than might be expected of a vehicle its age. The van passed the Arizona Emissions test in April 2018. The stove and sink work and I have both the front and rear tables for the van. The van has had the following updates within the last 3,000 miles: new tires (4 + spare), new pop top canvas, new fuel pump & filter, new rear axles, and new rear brakes. Finally, I purchased an Experian AutoCheck Vehicle History Report prior to purchasing the van which confirmed there have been zero reported accidents and both the title and odometer check out. The Bad - The van has a slow engine oil leak. Doug's Bugs in Phoenix believes the cause is a rear main seal. I leave a pan under the van in the garage and top off the oil occasionally and have never had any issues. Occasionally the van struggles to start up right away if it was still warm from a previous trip. I recently had the fuel pump, the mass air flow sensor, and the Temp II sensor changed and it fixed the issue. The body and bumpers show signs of their age which is to be expected. The body has paint scratches, some paint fading, light rust at the base of a couple windows, some small dents, and one area that looks like it was bondo'd on the rear quarter panel. The refrigerator doesn't work (it offers great storage for manuals and spare parts!). The A/C fan works but it doesn't put out very cold air (this is a 'windows down' vehicle!). Furthermore, there is no radio and the cruise control lever and the defrost button don't work. These vans have become iconic in recent years and anyone who has driven one knows the experience is in the journey (it tops out at 55-60mph) and the destination. Things will go wrong with the van as is common with older vehicles. If you are prepared for that up front and look at it as part of the adventure you will find this to be a very enjoyable head turner of a vehicle! A few other things: 1) I have a brand new carpet kit from Sew Fine (https://sewfineproducts.com/) which closely resembles the original carpet color and will be included in the sale. 2) I also have the green VW repair manual as well as a box of commonly needed spare parts (fuses, spark plugs, belt, etc.) that I will include with the sale, and 3) My wife made and installed new curtains in the van but I have all the original curtains as well as the rear hatch mosquito net that I will include with the sale as well. Make sure to check out the pictures and the following video for more information on the vehicle: https://youtu.be/PQwoeQY7o9k Please feel free to email with questions or to see the van in person. Thank you!
