As an owner/publisher of your own mailing zone you are responsible to sell direct mail advertising to local merchants to help them reach new clients and build visibility in the local market. If you canvas your market, meet business owners and prospect for new businesses that are opening, you should be able to sell the 30 ads required to fill a 12 page magazine or grow your profits by selling 40 ads to fill a 16 page magazine. Ambitious Area Publishers sell more ads and grow profits and page count to 20, 24 or 32 pages. Local brick/mortar stores pull most of their customers from a 3-5 mile radius around their business. Direct mail advertising allows them the opportunity to reach these local homes and saturate their primary trade area at a VERY LOW cost-per-home price. All the merchants in Hometown Values SHARE the cost to print and mail .....it's like car-pooling advertising dollars. In essence, we custom build the merchant's ad, print in full color and mail to a home for 2-4 cents! ($296 to $600 depending on ad size to print/mail to 15,000 homes). We currently publish editions from Bellingham to Tacoma in the Puget Sound/Seattle market. Each zone mails to 15,000 to 30,000 homes quarterly. It's a great business if you want to set your own hours and control your effort...no waiting around a showroom for someone to come in, rather we stop by to see local merchants and introduce them to our product. I act as a print broker, working with all the vendors to make sure your magazine is produced/printed and mailed on time to the correct addresses. You focus on ad sales in your market as you are logistics free! I deal with the printers around the nation, address list providers, US Post office and freight companies to make sure your magazines are printed, addressed, shipped and mailed to the correct addresses. I'm also an Area Publisher that has three zones of my own so I have skin in the game. Profits on a 16 page magazine typically range from $5,000-$8,000 per issue, depending how you structure your sales, discount rate, trade deals and selling price. To grow profits, simply sell more ads, increase page revenue and/or grow your page count. Earnings and income depend solely on your sales efforts. If you grow ad sales to 24 page magazines (around 70 advertisers) profits can reach $10,000-$15,000 per issue. No boss.....look in the mirror, sell more ads/work harder and give yourself a raise! Lastly we have an abundance of trade opportunities: auto service, dental service, hair/nail care, animal services, etc. If you need something in your life you can find a supplier of that product or service and trade that product or service for advertising in your magazine. Also, if you are fortunate to be in a market near other established Area Publishers/magazines, you can profit by placing a cross sale (your client's ad into another APs zone) and visa versa.
