The sheep are feed a diet of sheep pellets and alfalfa hay. The barn is lined with wheat straw each year for sheep bedding. Usually in the months of August and September (when it is dryer) we harvest the sheep manure using a rotor tiller to loosen it and then shoveled it into a repurpose plastic reinforced 50-pound feed bag. The feed bags are heavy plastic bags that once contained feed for the sheep and other animals on the farm. Our bags of manure are only harvested from the area where the sheep are fed and do their business. Bags of manure are sold by volume and not weight. The bags of manure will not weigh 50 pounds because the manure is packaged dry, but we pack as much manure into each as we can and still closed them for transportation.
